SinopseJapanese artist Yasumasa Morimura, a controversial and unique figure on the international contemporary art scene, employs photography to provide original re-readings of some of the central themes of art, painting in particular. He gives his reinterpretations of such famous European painters as Velazquez, Goya, Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt van Rijn. Themes such as ´seeing´ and ´being seen´, the redefinition of sexual gender and the sense of belonging to one of its many declination – which is so ambiguous, particularly today, to the point that the greater part of Morimura’s subjects were originally women – are issues that lead to other, deeper considerations ranging from religion to politics. They underline Morimura’s need to stress the different perceptions the ego has of itself and the artist’s ability to experiment with a role that has potential universal value - especially in the new work created for the Venice Biennale. Despite an evident predilection for ´western art´, Morimura does seek common points between Oriental and Western cultures in order to provoke, but in particular to understand the effects of seeing Brigitte Bardot sitting on a motorcycle in the streets of Osaka, or Marilyn fluttering on a pedestal in a hall at Tokyo University. The broad-ranging series of works devoted to Mexican artist Frida Khalo, An Inner Dialogue with Frida Kahlo, summarises and gives an exhaustive account of Morimura’s artistic development and his interest in the many facets of the psyche which determine the choice of each single detail in his photographs. Requiem for the XX Century is a gallery of key personalities from the twentieth century: Che Guevara and Mao Tsedong are presented with tired haggard faces, Adolf Hitler/Charlie Chaplin seems to be joking even more than ever with the globe, Vladimir Lenin addresses a disillusioned and bored crowd, and finally Yukio Mishima, Morimura’s true alter ego, is capable of self-immolation in the name of art, crying: Banzai, Banzai, Banzai, Long Live Art.
